Alma Dunkelberger died peacefully on April 30, 2024, she lived to be 100 years old.
October 9, 1923, Alma Corinne Dunkelberger was born to George A. and Hannah (Sober) Dunkelberger in Irish Valley, Pa. She was the youngest of 9 children and as the last of her generation she was valued by her large and loving family. Nieces and nephews called her regularly from various places in the country.
Alma had many interesting stories of growing up on a dairy farm and attending a one-room grammar school. After graduating from Sunbury High School, she worked at Montgomery Ward in Baltimore.
In 1942 she married Russell C. Dunkelberger, also from Irish Valley. Their oldest daughter, Conni (Joe Link), was born while Russell was serving in the Army in Japan.
Later they moved to Lancaster and had 2 more daughters, 'Beth and Kathy (Chris Armstrong).
Alma and family attended First United Methodist Church where she was active in Sunday School, United Methodist Women, Appenzeller Mission Circle, and as a communion steward and Stephen Minister.
Through the years Alma worked at Keppel Candies and Yorgey's Dry Cleaners. Later she was a costume stitcher for several local theatre companies.
Alma is survived by her grandchildren Nikki (Judie Flear) and Tony, great-grandchildren Kirstyn (D.J. Hinkley), April, Cody (David Brown), Channing and Liam, and great-great-granddaughter Lily.
In addition to her 8 siblings, Alma was predeceased by husband Russell and granddaughter Linda.
Alma was known for her sense of humor, her needlework, and her extensive elephant collection.
A Memorial Service will be held for Alma C. Dunkelberger on Saturday, June 15, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. at First United Methodist Church, 29 E. Walnut St., Lancaster, PA 17602. Doors will open for visitation at10:00 A.M. Those attending are requested to please refrain from wearing perfume.
In lieu of flowers,donations may be sent to First United Methodist Church at the address above.
All are cordially invited to a reception to be held on the church premises immediately following theservice.
