September 2, 1929 – November 12, 2024
Clyde L. "Spec" Sweigart, age 95, of Quarryville, Pa. went to be with our Lord and Savior on 11/12/2024 at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community.
Born in Ephrata, Pa. was the son of the late Leroy G. Sweigart and Emily (Crowther) Sweigart.
Clyde was married to Beverly (Galloway) Sweigart and celebrated their 67th year anniversary in September.
Surviving children, Steve Sweigart husband of Marge Sweigart, North Carolina, Cathy Sweigart companion of Jeff Stoy, Willow Street, Pa., Ann Eckert wife of Bud Eckert of Reamstown, Pa., Mary Jane Stoltzfus, wife of Kevin Stoltzfus, Mountville, Pa. and Rosemary Bennett, wife of Victor Bennett of Atlanta, Georgia.
Preceded in death by, brothers Galen, Oran, Gerald, Larry and Bobby, a sister Mildred. Along with infant children, Michael, Andrew and Ruth.
Clyde had 17 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.
Clyde loved spending time with family and friends, loved the Lord and enjoyed numerous camping trips with his family. An avid gardener, wood worker, dancer with his beloved wife and was a big sports enthusiast.
Clyde played football, basketball, and baseball for Ephrata High School. He lettered two years in both football and basketball and a year in baseball. He was also the co-captain of the basketball team
.
In his earlier years, Clyde ran numerous marathons, including the Boston marathon with his wife, at age 50.
Clyde served his country in the US Army with the 82nd. airborne division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, seeing duty at the infantry school, Fort Benning, Georgia for his basic training and Artillery 5th. Infantry Division, Fort Jackson, South Carolina, as a Clerk General. Clyde reached the rank of Sergeant. Was a former member of the American Legion, Quarryville, Pa. and a former member of the Ground Hog Lodge, Quarryville, Pa.
After serving his country, Clyde attended East Stroudsburg State Teachers College and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in health and physical education in 1956. While in college, he participated in football, earning an induction into the University's Hall of fame, and participated in track. Clyde taught physical education at Solanco school district from 1956 until his retirement in1982, but kept that teaching, coaching, and encouraging spirit to those he crossed paths with. During his tenure, he also coached football, wrestling and track. When he arrived at Solanco, there was no track team, Clyde started the program as he was drawn to the sport because the broad spectrum of events provided opportunities for athletes of all shapes, sizes and skills. He liked the fact that no matter what physique the athlete carried to the team, he would find an event that resonated with him and, through hard work in life and training, correlated to success on the field. Through his creative mind, he fabricated the pole vault plant box and the toe board for the shot and discuss and dug the pits himself and used saw dust for the jumping events. Clyde was inducted into the Solanco sports hall of fame in 2023. He spent a lifetime dedicated to the value of physical fitness and always had a positive disposition and smile that resonated.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 12, at Wesley Church, 1104 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville, PA 17566. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m., followed by a service at 2 p.m.
