Obituary

Helen (Barr) Fry, 100, of Akron, PA, passed away on Wednesday, March 27, 2024 at Ephrata Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband Elmer W. Fry, to whom she was married for over 70 years. They were married in Honey Brook, PA on April 8, 1945.

Born in Honey Brook, PA, she was daughter of the late James J. and Sarah Esther (Herr) Barr. Helen B. Fry graduated from Penn State University with a degree in Agricultural and Biological Chemistry in 1945. She worked at Gerber Baby Foods in Fremont, MI, in 1945 until her husband returned from WWII. Helen was a full-time Mom to her 3 sons and then transitioned back to the workforce as a substitute teacher in West Windsor Township, NJ, and finally a full time teacher at Stuart Day School. Helen loved sports; running track and playing tennis when she was younger, than adding in bowling and walking later in life. She instilled this love of athletics in her sons and became a passionate fan of their own athletic endeavors. After moving to Akron, PA, she volunteered at the Ephrata Library and delivered Meals on Wheels. Her main hobby activities were creating and selling stained glass sun catchers and kaleidoscopes. She was a member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Ephrata.

She is survived by three sons; Ben Israel and wife Rebekah of Bellevue, WA, David Fry and wife Valthea of Clifton, VA and Edward Fry and wife Debra of Sugar Land, TX; four granddaughters, two grandsons, and 14 great grandchildren.

Helen was preceded in death by sisters Sally Poole and Janet Patterson.

The family expresses its heartfelt thanks to Walid Hammad and his wife Hanadi Alkhateeb for their constant, respectful care and companionship to Helen over a 12 year period. Together with the love, compassion and hard work of their niece Kathy Fogie and daughter-in-law Rebekah Israel, Helen and Elmer were able to live comfortably their last 12+ years in their own home.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, May 25, 2024, at 11AM at the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Ephrata, 21 E Locust St, Ephrata, PA 17522. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the memorial service at the Church.

Interment, alongside her husband Elmer, will be at the Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Dutch Neck NJ.
