Obituary

Howard Lucas, age 86, a native of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and resident of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania died peacefully at Hamilton Arms in Lancaster Pennsylvania, Saturday, March 2, 2024. He was born April 10, 1937.

Howard was a warmhearted, caring gentleman. As a retired actor, his passion was the Arts, especially the Theatre.

Howard was an original member of Harrisburg Community Theatre's Junior Theatre. After graduating from William Penn High School, he went directly into the Cleveland Playhouse. He acted in theatres in L.A., San Francisco, and for many seasons with New York's Classic Stage Company, CSC. He appeared in 60 Shakespearean productions over the years, and in plays by Chekov, Shaw, Moliere, and Aristophanes and Sophocles. His solo acting performances were seen in various concert venues in New York, including Lincoln Center.

The following quote by Nevada Barr in Winter Story was found among Howard's things after he died and perfectly expresses the core of him:

"One of the things he loved most in the theatre was waiting in the wings to go on. Quiet in the living dark of backstage, he said he was where he was supposed to be, in a space only he could occupy; he knew who was and who he could be."

Howard is survived by his sister-in-law, a nephew and many nieces, and a grandnephew and grandnieces as well as dear friends. He was preceded in death by a niece, his parents and his siblings.
