John Henry Jeffers

John Henry Jeffers, 73, of Painter, VA, passed away peacefully on September 2, 2026, in Lancaster County, surrounded by his family. John was born in Philadelphia and raised in Marlton, New Jersey.

He graduated from Upper Darby High School in Pennsylvania and dedicated many years to auto repair at the US Postal Service until his retirement. 

John is survived by his children, Jay (Angela), Stacey Wallace (Matt), Joseph, Jeannine Turner (Bryan), Veronica Link (Jared), and Genesis; his grandchildren, Daniel, Miles, and Katie Jeffers, and Eva and Ezra Turner; his sister Connie Quigley (Mike); his former spouses and dear friends Louise DiSylvestro and Rose Edwards; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family members. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Mary Jeffers, and his sister Theresa Norton. 

An exceptionally gifted mechanic and handyman, John developed his skill early in life by rebuilding engines alongside his father and assisting his beloved Uncle Gus with his Volkswagens. His generosity with these talents was legendary. John was always the first to step up for neighbors needing help with a vehicle or home project, whether building a deck or troubleshooting a repair. When he lived in Havertown, PA, he rescued his neighbors from a second-story window during a house fire. Ever modest, John politely declined to be interviewed by the local newspaper reporting on the event. 

Becoming a father was one of the defining joys of John’s life. He raised his six children with a deep commitment to honesty, accountability, empathy, and kindness. They were his world and he never hesitated to drop everything to help them, and he did his fair share of rescuing them from a breakdown on the side of the road, always managing to keep their cars running long past their expiration dates. 

In his leisure time, John loved the outdoors and found peace in nature. He loved spending time at French Creek State Park, fishing in Chincoteague, hunting, going to the beach, and taking quiet walks through his neighborhood. He was a dedicated Philly sports fan, faithfully tuning in to root for the Eagles and Phillies, though he rarely hesitated to offer a sharp, loving critique whenever he felt the Phillies were playing "bad baseball." 

Above all, John’s life was defined by his devotion to his family and his Christian faith. One of the last great joys of his life was walking his daughter Veronica down the aisle and seeing her marry Jared in a beautiful ceremony. John's family takes lasting comfort in knowing he spent his last precious moments surrounded by those he loved most. 

In accordance with John's wishes, funeral services will be held privately for the immediate family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in John's memory to the United Way of Eastern Shore Virginia or the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
